Our work/life balance initiatives

The Building Commission values work life balance.  The vision for work life success is:

  • A committed and passionate workforce
  • An organisation that is recognised for its leadership and vision and therefore able to attract the best talent
  • A workforce that is responsive to change and a workplace that demonstrates its respect for employees and their differences by supporting them to effectively manage the many important aspects of their lives.

Many of our work life balance initiatives are included in the Building Commission Agreement 2003 and the life balance handbook.  These initiatives include flexible working hours, home-based work, additional annual leave options and carers leave.  There are also health and wellbeing initiatives such as discounted gym memberships, free health checks and forums on personal and financial planning that support the braoder goals of work/life balance.

The Commission was awarded the Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry and Business Council of Australia, National Work and Family Rising Star Award in May 2004 (joint winner), and the Industrial Relations Victoria Workplace Excellence Awards for Better Work and Family Balance Award in October 2004.
