Background

Prior to the 5 Star standard being announced in June 2003, there was extensive consultation and various studies assessing the standard. For more information download:

In BCA 2008, changes have been made to the climate zone map affecting 5 Victorian municipalities

These changes do not affect the use of a thermal calculation method complying with the ABCB protocol for House Energy Rating Software.

For example, in the Shire of East Gippsland the coastal strip which was previously Climate Zone 6 has been shown on the BCA2008 climate zone map as being in Climate Zone 7. This has brought it out of alignment with the neighbouring Wellington and Bega Valley Shires.

If it is believed that the designation of any climate zone does not reflect actual conditions, it is recommended that the provisions of section 10 of the Building Act 1993 be applied to allow continuation of compliance with BCA2007 requirements or otherwise, that an alternative solution based on more accurate temperature/humidity climate classification data (accessible via the Bureau of Meteorology website, www.bom.gov.au ) should be accepted.
