Build Better by becoming a Registered Building Practitioner
To become a registered building practitioner, an application must be lodged with the Building Practitioners Board. Evidence that you are covered by the required insurance will also be necessary. Click on the below links to view the application forms.
- Building inspector

- Demolisher
- Domestic builder
- Draftsperson
- Engineer
- Erector of temporary structures
- Quantity surveyor
Initially, a staff member of the Board will ensure that all the required information is provided with your application. When complete, this person will then forward your application for assessment to the Board member responsible for your registration category for final review and decision. In the case of domestic builders, assessment is undertaken by a Board-appointed competency assessor.
Assessment Process
Applicants for registration in the category of Domestic Builder Class of Manager, Unlimited and Limited will be required to undertake the following Assessment process:
(1) Sit a computer based closed book examination (multiple choice format)
(2) Identify faults on a building plan
(3) A face-to-face interview with an Accredited Competency Assessor
The results of each component form part of an overall assessment which assists the Building Practitioners Board in determining eligibility for registration.
Please note: Components (1) and (2) of the assessment process are currently conducted at the offices of the Building Commission, Goods Shed North, 733 Bourke Street, Docklands, Victoria 3008. Regional applicants must contact their allocated Case Officer to arrange for the interview to be undertaken at a regional location.
During the assessment process, you may be asked to provide additional information in support of your application or asked to attend an interview to demonstrate your competencies in the category of registration sought.
The recommendation of the Board member/Assessor is then made to a full meeting of the Board, held each month. In order for an application to be considered by the Board at its monthly meeting, it must be submitted with all the required information.
As with many decisions of the Building Practitioners Board, if you are refused registration in the category being sought, you have a right to appeal through the Building Appeals Board.
