What is sustainability in the built environment?
Environmental sustainability involves protecting the environment at a constant level without damaging it further. It has been estimated that buildings contribute 40-50% of greenhouse gas emissions globally. Here in Victoria, the commercial and residential sectors account for over 40% of annual greenhouse gas emissions. If we do not reduce greenhouse gas emissions, global warming will accelerate. Any significant change in climate will impact the world's ecosystems and our futures.
Sustainability in the built environment involves promoting energy and water efficient buildings and minimising their ecological footprint. To achieve this homes, offices and farms in every community must work together in becoming more sustainable. Truly sustainable development will improve economic efficiency, while protecting and restoring ecological systems, and enhancing the well-being of people in general.
The Building Commission is committed to developing and implementing sustainability initiatives targeting building design, construction and use. The Commission is working closely with the building industry to develop a common vision on sustainability in the built environment.
